| The Mock Skirmish celebrated an
incident in 1750 when the Mount's canons opened fire on a French vessel.
Tragically
one of the cannons blew up killing one of the islanders - whose descendant Steven
Matthews, lives on the Mount today. The fleet - led in 1999 by the Russian
Vessel 'Courier' - assembled off St Michael's Mount. A maroon was fired
from St. Michaels Mount to signify commencement of battle. Following the mock
battle the fleet sailed back to Penzance to catch the last of the tide.. The
