| Lewis
Mitchell, born in Penzance in 1938, grew up and worked along the coastline overlooking
Mounts Bay a landscape that was a big influence on his subject matter. He did
not start painting until he was nearly forty years old and was totally self taught
though he was encouraged by Alex McKenzie. His colours are pure and untoned, he
loves the vibrancy of primary colours and feels 'that all the paintings with the
most colours are abstract, why can't a picture have all that colour but be more
straightforward and have a broader appeal - be less esoteric'. Lewis is represented
in many public and private collections in Great Britain and abroad. David
Schanahan was born and raised in the South of Ireland but has lived in Cornwall
and Devon for most of his life. His Irish background motivates most of the subject
matter to be found in his paintings. He finds the tension between Christian and
Pagan, myth and reality, past versus present continues to provide him with a rich
iconic feast of material. A former student of Kingston and Dartington Colleges
of Arts, this is his third show at the Rainyday Gallery. Davis has shown widely
in galleries throughout the UK and abroad and his work can be found in collections
in Eire, U.S.A, Denmark, Holland, Canada, Japan and Australia.
